At Hope Kids on Sundays, we are currently running an exciting series called 'Mystery Manor'. Each week we enter Great-Grandpa Pif Paf's Manor and use our detective skills as we explore a different room. Each clue points us to the bible to help us find evidence to understand different questions about God, the bible and Christianity. We want kids to understand that reading the bible helps us to have faith in God. Here is were we are up to in our series...
1. God is real! He created things that are impossible for people to make.
We looked at the story of creation in Genesis 1 to see that many of the things in the world around us are impossible for people to make, only a creator could have made them.
2. God is 3 in 1.
God is made up of the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. Dring creation in Genesis 1, God spoke the world into creation and the Holy Spirit hovered over the waters, both parts of God at work together. When an angel delivers a message from God the Father to Mary, the angel tells Mary that the Holy Spirit will come to her and she will give birth to the son of God. Here we see 3 distinct parts of the same God at work. When Jesus, the Son, is baptised by John, the Holy Spirit descends upon Him and God the Father says "This is my son and I love Him". Throughout the bible we see all 3 parts of God at work all at the same time, but they are all part of the same God.
3. What the bible says, God says.
2 Peter 1:20-21 says; 'Most of all, you must understand this: No prophecy in the Scriptures ever comes from the prophet’s own interpretation. No prophecy ever came from what a person wanted to say, but people led by the Holy Spirit spoke words from God.' God helped people to write the words He wanted in the Bible and He made sure no mistakes were made. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says; 'All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right. Using the Scriptures, the person who serves God will be capable, having all that is needed to do every good work.' The Bible is a big instruction manual to help us understand the way God wants us to live.
What can you do to encourage learning at home with your kids?
It has been brilliant to teach every child in Hope Kids during our series so far. They are getting excited to learn more about God from the Bible. Keep this excitement thoughout the week, we want to see kids who are passionate about the bible. Here are a few ideas for you:
Read the stories and discuss with your children the key points learnt so far.
We repeat the key points many times in Hope Kids, doing this at home will keep them thinking about what they have learnt.
Read some other stories and ask your child, why do you think God put this story here? Did He want to teach us something?
Over dinner or while you are walking somewhere ask your child; what did you or can you see today that only God could have made?
